What does the Google bot do?

Googlebot is something which checks on quite a lot of forum sites, 3 of the forums I use always have it logged in. I'm not sure exactly what it does, but I think it is some statistic gathering thing for google.

It indexes the site and forum posts for showing up in search queries. You'll see it online more on other forums which are posted to regularly. The Google Bot is given access as if it were a logged in user, rather than as if it were a guest visitor to the site, to ensure it gets the best access to topics and their content.
